Best GEO and AEO Courses in 2026: 11 Programs Compared

Best GEO and AEO Courses in 2026: 11 Programs Compared

Rank Prompt 21 min read

Quick Answer

A GEO or AEO course teaches you how to get a brand mentioned and cited inside AI-generated answers, rather than ranked in a list of blue links. GEO stands for generative engine optimization and AEO for answer engine optimization, and most courses in 2026 teach both under one or the other name.

We compared 11 GEO and AEO courses available in August 2026. Seven are free, four are paid, and the paid ones run from $299 to $549.

Our recommended starting point is our own free Rank Prompt GEO & AEO course, for agencies and consultants specifically. In about 90 minutes and 20 lessons it covers the GEO framework, on-site work including schema, llms.txt and crawlability, off-site citation building, and then how to package, price and sell GEO as a service. It issues no certificate, so if you need a credential take HubSpot or Surfer, both free. For the fastest start with no account at all, take Ahrefs.

Rank Prompt publishes this comparison and one of the eleven courses is ours, judged on the same fields as everything else with its weaknesses printed in its own entry. Every price, duration and certificate claim was read off the provider’s own live page, so check before you buy.

Key Takeaways

  • Seven of the eleven courses are free, and five of those seven still end in a certificate.
  • A free course does not mean a free certificate. Coursera’s course is free to enter but charges for the credential.
  • Only one certificate here has a published pass mark. Surfer requires 17 correct answers out of 20 and expires after two years.
  • No accredited GEO or AEO standard exists. Every certificate on this page is issued by the company that made the course.
  • Measurement appears in 10 of the 11 curricula we reviewed. Selling GEO as a service appears in exactly one, ours.
  • The four paid courses sell delivery, meaning a live instructor and a schedule, not fundamentals the free tier skips.
  • We build Rank Prompt. Our course is free and has no certificate at all, which rules it out for anyone who needs a credential.

Best GEO or AEO Course by Use Case

Our editor’s pick, for agencies and consultants: Rank Prompt. Learn the work, then learn to sell it: service tiers, pricing benchmarks and proposals sit alongside the GEO material. Skip it if you need a credential, because it does not issue one.

Best if you want to start in the next five minutes: Ahrefs Academy. The only course here with no signup of any kind, and at 1h 26m it still covers measurement.

Best free certification: HubSpot Academy. Free, beginner-level, and it ends in a certification from a long-established academy.

Best certificate you have to earn: Surfer Academy. The only certificate in this comparison with a published pass mark, 17 of 20, and the only one that expires, after two years.

Best if you already pay for Semrush: Semrush Academy. Roughly 80 minutes built around the Semrush toolkit, so much of the value depends on having the subscription.

Best for enterprise teams: seoClarity. For in-house teams needing technical AEO plus the attribution and ROI coverage most of the free tier leaves out.

Best for PR and communications: Muck Rack Academy. The only course here written for a job function other than SEO, covering earned media in LLMs and stakeholder communication.

Best longer self-paced course: Coursera (SkillUp). Four hours across two modules with labs and quizzes, and a shareable credential once you buy the Certificate experience.

Best for advanced comparison content: CXL Institute. A $299 on-demand course about one job, building the comparison pages LLMs cite.

Best live cohort: Maven. $499 for two live sessions with confirmed dates and a named instructor to question in real time.

Best team training: Jellyfish. A scheduled one-day instructor-led course at $549 a head, with private sessions offered for teams.

How We Chose and Compared These Courses

We looked at every GEO, AEO and AI-search course we could find with a public page, then applied four gates. A course had to pass all four to appear here.

The four inclusion gates:

  • GEO or AEO specific. It teaches optimizing for AI answer engines, not general SEO with an AI module bolted on.
  • Publicly verifiable. Curriculum, format and price are stated on a public page we can link to.
  • Currently available. You can enrol today, on the verification date.
  • Named instructor or accountable institution. Someone or some organisation puts their name to it.

What we report for every course, in the same order: price, duration, certificate and what earning it requires, level, curriculum, who it suits and who it does not.

How this list is ordered

This is not a scored ranking, and positions two through eleven are not in quality order. A free 90-minute primer and a $549 instructor-led day are not the same kind of object, and scoring them against each other would invent a precision nobody has.

Instead, one editor’s pick opens the list, labelled as the opinion it is. Everything after it is grouped free first, then paid, each carrying the use case it fits. No course gets an award invented to make it look distinct, and two labels were cut during review when the facts stopped supporting them.

Where the editor’s pick stops. Ours is a recommendation for agencies and consultants, not a claim to be best overall. Our course issues no certificate, its published curriculum does not cover measurement, and its fourth part is written for people with clients. An in-house marketer with no client work should start with Ahrefs or HubSpot instead.

One course did not make it. Webflow University lists an AEO course and it looks promising, but every lesson still reads “Coming soon”. It fails the availability gate for now, and we will add it when it actually launches.

GEO and AEO Course Curriculum Comparison

Compiled from each provider’s published curriculum. A blank cell means the topic is not listed on that provider’s course page, not that the course definitely never mentions it.

What the table shows that the marketing copy does not. These are our readings of eleven published curricula, not claims any provider makes about the others:

  • Measuring AI visibility appears in 10 of the 11 curricula. The exception is ours, which leaves measurement to the platform. A real gap.
  • Schema and llms.txt are the dividing line between a literacy course and an implementation course. Ahrefs, Rank Prompt and Jellyfish carry both.
  • Ahrefs has the broadest free coverage of the topics we tracked, at seven of eight.

Eleven courses teach you to do GEO. One also teaches you to sell it.

Service tiers, pricing benchmarks and proposals appear in exactly one of the eleven published curricula we reviewed, and it is ours. That is why our course opens this list for agencies and consultants, and why it will not suit an in-house marketer with no clients.

Why the underlying mechanics matter. Several of these courses teach retrieval-augmented generation, the architecture behind most AI answers, first described in a 2020 paper by Lewis and colleagues. The retrieval step it depends on comes from dense passage retrieval, published the same year. The discipline itself is newer: the first academic framework for generative engine optimization appeared in 2023, which is why no course here is more than about two years old.

Format, Level and Vendor Dependence

This table carries what the one near the top does not: delivery format, assumed level, and whether the teaching runs partly inside the provider’s own software.

Rank Prompt: Free GEO & AEO Course

rankprompt free geo aeo course

Our own course page. The 20 lessons, the 90 minutes and the agency slide in the player are the basis for both its category and its stated limitation. Captured 12 August 2026.

Our editor’s pick for agencies and consultants. We built it, so treat the pick as our opinion and the fields below as the evidence. Every other course here stops at how to do GEO; this one carries on into how to package, price and sell it.

  • Best for: Agency owners, consultants and freelancers turning GEO into a billable service
  • Price: Free, email signup, no card required
  • Duration: ~90 minutes across 20 lessons in 4 parts
  • Certificate: None
  • Level: Beginner to intermediate
  • Platform: Audience-specific. Part 4 is written for people with clients

What you’ll learn:

  • The GEO framework, including how GEO and AEO differ and how six AI platforms behave.
  • Internal GEO, covering AI-readiness audits, content structuring, schema, llms.txt and crawlability.
  • External GEO, covering the citation graph, digital PR, and platforms like G2 and Reddit.
  • Selling and delivering GEO, covering service tiers, pricing benchmarks and proposal templates.

Pros

  • Covers both halves of the job, on-site and off-site, in one 90-minute pass.
  • The only curriculum here with service packaging and pricing, per our comparison.
  • Ships templates, including SOPs, proposals and reporting.

Cons

  • No certificate of any kind. Five free courses below will give you one.
  • Measurement is absent from the published curriculum, so pair it with Ahrefs.
  • A quarter of the runtime is about selling, dead weight if you have no clients.

Who should skip it: In-house marketers with no client work, and anyone needing a credential.

Free GEO and AEO Courses

Six more free courses passed the gates, in no particular order.

Ahrefs Academy: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) Course

ahrefs academy aeo course

Ahrefs states the terms in the hero: free, and no sign-up required. Captured 12 August 2026

The only course here you can start without creating an account.

  • Best for: Getting a credible grounding in AEO fast

  • Duration: 1h 26m across 12 lessons in 5 modules
  • Certificate: None
  • Level: Beginner to intermediate
  • Platform: General-purpose. Ahrefs sells SEO software, but the course is not a product tour

What you’ll learn:

  • How AI search works, covering retrieval and how answers get assembled.
  • AEO strategy, then AEO execution as a separate module.
  • Measuring AEO, which several courses on this page skip entirely.

Pros

  • No account, no email, no card. Nothing between you and the first lesson.
  • Broadest topic coverage of the free tier in our curriculum comparison, at seven of eight.
  • Named practitioner instructor, Sam Oh, VP of Marketing at Ahrefs.

Cons

  • No certificate and no assessment, so nothing to show at the end.

Who should skip it: Anyone who needs a credential.

Verified: 12 August 2026.

HubSpot Academy: AEO Fundamentals

hubspot academy aeo fundamentals

The FREE Certification Course badge and the 100% free, no credit card needed line sit on the same screen. Captured 12 August 2026.

A free course that ends in a certification, from an academy that predates AI search by a decade.

  • Best for: A free credential at beginner level
  • Price: Free. A HubSpot Academy account is required and is itself free
  • Duration: 2h 20m across 7 lessons and 19 videos
  • Certificate: Yes, a certification on completion
  • Level: Beginner
  • Platform: General-purpose. HubSpot’s own products appear, but the curriculum is not built around them

What you’ll learn:

  • How search evolved into AI-powered answer systems.
  • EEAT foundations, then planning content for both search and AI visibility.
  • Optimizing for AI citations, covering on-page elements and structured data.
  • Measuring what matters in AEO.

Pros

  • Free certification, with the most recognisable brand of the free tier.
  • Genuinely beginner-friendly, with no assumed SEO background.
  • Two named instructors and a structured 19-video path.

Cons

  • Foundations only. Experienced SEOs will know much of lesson one already.
  • No off-site or citation-building coverage on the published curriculum.

Who should skip it: Experienced SEOs looking for implementation depth.

Verified: 12 August 2026.

Surfer Academy: AI Search Optimization Masterclass

surfer academy ai search optimization

Surfer’s masterclass hero, reporting over 28,000 completions of its previous course at 4.7 out of 5. Captured 12 August 2026.

The only certificate in this comparison with a published pass mark and an expiry date.

  • Best for: A free credential that took some effort
  • Price: Free. The page says the team made it “available to every marketer, no strings attached”
  • Duration: Roughly 2 hours across 20 lessons in 7 modules

  • Building topical authority, plus schema markup and digital PR.
  • Scaling workflows and structuring a team around the work.
  • Measurement frameworks for reporting to leadership or clients.

Pros

  • The credential means something. A pass mark and an expiry are rare here.

  • Three named instructors, including Surfer’s CMO.

Cons

  • Assumes some background. It is not a first course.
  • Registration required on a separate community platform.

Who should skip it: Complete beginners.

Verified: 12 August 2026.

Semrush Academy: AI Visibility Essentials

semrush academy ai visibility essentials

seoclarity aeo certification course

  • No named instructor.
  • Enterprise framing throughout, including the tooling and examples.

Who should skip it: Solo marketers and small agencies.

Verified: 12 August 2026.

Muck Rack Academy: Fundamentals of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

muck rack academy geo fundamentals

Both duration figures this entry flags are visible: about 1 hour in the description, 1.5 hours on the curriculum. Captured 12 August 2026

The only course in this comparison written for a job function other than SEO.

  • Best for: PR and communications professionals
  • Price: Free, registration required
  • Duration: The page says “about 1 hour” while the curriculum header lists 1.5 hours. Budget for the longer figure
  • Certificate: Yes, after all lessons, module quizzes and a final exam
  • Level: Beginner
  • Platform: Audience-specific. Every module is framed for PR and comms workflows

What you’ll learn:

  • How generative AI reshapes brand visibility, and what earns citations in AI answers.
  • The strategic value of earned media inside LLMs.
  • Prompt engineering for communications use cases.
  • Explaining GEO to stakeholders, plus long-term measurement thinking.

Pros

  • Speaks the reader’s language if that reader works in PR.
  • The stakeholder-communication module has no equivalent elsewhere in this comparison.
  • Exam-backed certificate at beginner level.

Cons

  • Technical modules stay at literacy level, not implementation.
  • Two conflicting durations on the same page.

Who should skip it: Technical SEOs who want to implement.

Verified: 12 August 2026.

coursera mastering geo course

Coursera publishes every number this entry quotes: 2 modules, 4 hours, intermediate, 8,219 enrolled. Captured 12 August 2026.

Four paid options passed the gates, ordered by price.

  • Certificate: Yes, shareable, behind the paywall

  • Platform: General-purpose

What you’ll learn:

  • Foundations of AI in SEO across the first module.
  • Generative engine optimization and executing GEO in practice, with hands-on labs and quizzes.

Pros

  • Most course hours of any option here.
  • Labs and quizzes, not only video.
  • Public signals of use: 8,219 enrolled with a 4.7 rating from 45 reviews.

Cons

  • The credential is paywalled, unlike five free certificates on this page.
  • Only two modules, so the topic spread is narrower than the hours suggest.

Who should skip it: Anyone expecting a free certificate.

What a GEO or AEO Certificate Is Actually Worth

There is no accredited GEO or AEO certification. Every certificate here is issued by the company that made the course, with no independent standards body involved. That does not make them worthless: each is worth roughly what the issuing brand is worth to whoever reads your profile.

How the certificates here actually differ:

  • HubSpot issues a certification on course completion, off the back of an academy that has been running since long before AI search existed.
  • Surfer is the only one with a published pass mark, 17 of 20, and the only one that expires, after two years.
  • Muck Rack requires module quizzes plus a final exam.
  • seoClarity requires module quizzes that can be retaken at any time.
  • Semrush requires a final assessment.
  • Coursera issues a shareable credential, but only after you buy the Certificate experience.
  • Maven gives a certificate of completion, and Jellyfish a certificate of attendance, which record participation rather than a passed assessment.
  • Ahrefs and Rank Prompt issue nothing.

One term worth separating. If you search for “AEO certification” you will mostly find results about Authorised Economic Operator status, a customs and trade programme with no relationship to answer engine optimization. Add “SEO”, “marketing” or “generative” to the query to filter it out.

What this means for you

  • If a credential is the point, start with HubSpot or Surfer. Both are free and both produce something dated.
  • Treat a certificate of attendance as a receipt, not a qualification.
  • Do not expect the certificate to do the work. A documented before-and-after on a real site counts for more.

Where to Start

Start free and stay free for a while. The discipline is barely two years old, and nothing on the paid tier teaches fundamentals the free tier misses.

  • Selling GEO to clients? Start with ours, then pair it with Ahrefs for the measurement half.
  • Not selling it? Start with Ahrefs, then add HubSpot or Surfer if you want a certificate.
  • Pay only for delivery. Book Maven or Jellyfish when what you need is a live human, not more material.

Any of this matters because the click is no longer guaranteed. Pew Research Center found that Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a search result 8% of the time, against 15% when no summary appeared.

Once you have learned the material, the next question is measurement. Our guide to what answer engine optimization is covers the concepts, and the free AI visibility checker shows where you stand before you change anything.
