Methodology

How this ChatGPT rank check works

A fast, honest read on the shortlist ChatGPT would present for one buyer question, and where you sit in it.

One real buyer query

You pick the exact question a buyer would ask, like "best project management software" or "top CRMs for small teams". Rankings are query-specific: a brand can be #1 for one question and invisible for the next, so testing the query that matters to you beats any generic benchmark.

An ordered shortlist

We ask an OpenAI GPT model to reconstruct the shortlist a ChatGPT answer would most likely present for that query, ranked by how prominently each brand would be named. Your brand is highlighted at its earned position, or honestly marked "Not ranked" if it would not appear.

Fair use limits

To keep this free for everyone, there is a fair limit on how often you can run a check. For scheduled rank tracking across your whole prompt set and six AI platforms, use Rank Prompt in the app.

What it measures

What a ChatGPT rank tracker actually tells you

Being mentioned is binary. Rank is competitive. The order in which ChatGPT names brands decides who gets considered, and that order is measurable.

When someone asks ChatGPT a buying question, the answer usually names a handful of brands in a deliberate order: the ones the model treats as defaults first, alternatives after, edge cases last, and everyone else not at all. That ordering is the AI era's version of a rankings page, except there are no ten blue links, only the three to eight names the model chose to say out loud.

A rank check therefore answers three questions a plain visibility check cannot: position, meaning where you sit in the shortlist when you do appear; company, meaning which competitors are named around you and who owns the top spots; and absence, meaning which buyer queries produce a shortlist you are not on at all, which is where the most revenue quietly leaks.

This free check covers one query at a time, which is enough to find your worst gaps. Continuous AI monitoring runs your whole prompt set on a schedule across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Grok and Google AI Mode, and records every rank change between runs.

FAQ

ChatGPT Rank Checker FAQ

What is a ChatGPT rank checker?
A ChatGPT rank checker shows which brands ChatGPT names when a buyer asks a specific question, and in what order. Instead of asking "does AI mention me at all?", it answers "for this exact buyer question, am I first, fourth, or missing entirely?" That order matters: the first brands named in an AI answer capture most of the consideration, the same way the top results on Google capture most of the clicks.
How does this tool estimate the ranking?
We send your buyer query to an OpenAI GPT model and ask it to reconstruct the ordered shortlist a ChatGPT answer would most likely present, based on which brands dominate authoritative coverage, recommendations, and comparisons for that query. It is a directional snapshot of one query at one moment, not a live scrape of every ChatGPT session. For tracked rankings over time across many prompts and platforms, that is what the full Rank Prompt platform does.
Why is my brand not ranked in ChatGPT?
Common reasons include: competitors dominating the review sites, comparison articles, and listicles that AI models lean on; weak third-party citations for your brand in that exact context; blocked AI crawlers in robots.txt; and thin or generic content on your own site. A "Not ranked" result tells you the gap exists; closing it means earning mentions in the sources AI trusts for that query.
How is a ChatGPT rank tracker different from an SEO rank tracker?
An SEO rank tracker reports where your page sits in a list of links for a keyword. A ChatGPT rank tracker reports where your brand sits inside the generated answer itself, which brands the model names, in what order, before the user ever sees a link. A page can rank #1 on Google while the brand is absent from the AI answer that decided the shortlist, so the two need to be measured separately.
How often should I check my ChatGPT rankings?
AI answers shift when models update and when competitor coverage changes, so a ranking can move within weeks. We recommend re-checking your most important buyer queries monthly at minimum, and after major content pushes, launches, or new third-party reviews. Continuous rank tracking across your whole prompt set is what Rank Prompt automates.
