Connect WordPress to Rank Prompt

Publish the articles Rank Prompt writes straight to your WordPress site, with the SEO title, meta description, focus keyword and schema filled in, now or at the time you schedule.

WordPress

Rank Prompt reads

  • Post URL and status
  • Search engine visibility setting
  • SEO plugin in use
  • IndexNow key

Rank Prompt sends

  • Title and body
  • Images
  • SEO title and meta description
  • Focus keyword
  • Article and FAQ JSON-LD
  • Publish date
Rank Prompt

What it does

  • Publishes an article to your site in one click, or schedules it for a date and time.
  • Fills the SEO title, meta description and focus keyword in Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO or SEOPress.
  • Ships Article and FAQ JSON-LD with every post.
  • Warns you about settings that stop a post from ranking, and pings Bing, Yandex, Seznam and Naver through IndexNow the moment a post goes live.
  • Keeps tracking each published article: its prompts, its keywords and what it won back.
  • Queues every publish: if the site does not answer, it tries again after 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour and 4 hours, and a publish that still fails shows on the calendar with what went wrong, and you get an email and a notification.

Before you start

Plan From Starter

  • A WordPress site on version 5.6 or later, served over https.
  • A WordPress user who can publish posts: Author, Editor or Administrator.
  • One click to approve Rank Prompt in your WordPress admin, or an application password for that user.
  • Optional: the Rank Prompt Connector plugin, so SEO fields reach plugins that do not accept them over the REST API and IndexNow is served.
Setup

WordPress setup in 4 steps

  1. Step 1

    Open Integrations, Publish Content

In Rank Prompt, go to Integrations, open the Publish Content tab and click + on the WordPress card.

The Publish Content tab of Rank Prompt Integrations, with the WordPress card and the hosted blog card.
  2. Step 2

Approve in one click, or paste an application password

Enter the site address and choose Continue in WordPress to approve Rank Prompt on your site’s Authorize Application screen. Or create an application password in WordPress under Users, Profile, Application Passwords and paste it with your username. It is not your login password.

The Add WordPress Connection dialog: site URL, a one-click Continue in WordPress button, and the username and application password fields.
  3. Step 3

    Read the connection check

Rank Prompt checks the site and says what it found: whether the SEO fields will reach your SEO plugin, whether search engines are told when you publish, and whether WordPress is set to discourage search engines.

  4. Step 4

    Publish or schedule

Open any article and publish it to the site, or pick a date and it goes live then, with its meta and its schema. The article’s prompts and keywords are tracked from that moment.

Troubleshooting

WordPress: errors and fixes

These are the messages the app shows, word for word, and what fixes each one.

  • Invalid username or application password

Use your WordPress username, not your email, and an application password from Users, Profile, Application Passwords. Your login password does not work here.

  • Access forbidden. Check user permissions.

The user needs a role that can publish posts: Author, Editor or Administrator.

  • WordPress REST API not found. Is this a WordPress site?

Check the address, including https and any subfolder. A security plugin that turns off the REST API causes this too.

  • This site does not offer application passwords, so it cannot connect in one click. WordPress 5.6 or later over https is needed, and a security plugin may have turned them off. Enter an application password instead.

Update WordPress, serve the site over https, or turn application passwords back on in your security plugin. Pasting an application password by hand still works.

  • Your WordPress site is behind a Cloudflare challenge that's blocking the REST API. Add a Cloudflare WAF Skip rule for the path `/wp-json/*` (or for the user agent 'RankPrompt'), then try again.

In Cloudflare, add a custom WAF rule with the Skip action for /wp-json/*. SiteGround and Wordfence show their own message, with the exact setting to change.

  • WordPress is set to discourage search engines from indexing this site (Settings, Reading). Nothing published here will rank or be cited until that box is unticked.

In WordPress, open Settings, Reading and untick Discourage search engines from indexing this site.

  • SEO fields cannot be saved on this site: All in One SEO does not accept them over the WordPress REST API. Install the connector plugin, or set them in WordPress after each publish.

Install and activate the Rank Prompt Connector plugin, then run the connection check again.

  • Search engines are not told when you publish: this site serves no IndexNow key. The connector plugin serves one.

The Connector plugin generates an IndexNow key and serves it; after installing it, the check says IndexNow is on.

FAQ

WordPress integration FAQs

Still have questions? Contact our team

Do I have to give Rank Prompt my WordPress password?

No. Rank Prompt connects with a WordPress application password, a separate credential WordPress has offered since version 5.6 that you can revoke at any time from your profile. The one-click option creates it for you on WordPress’s own Authorize Application screen.

Which SEO plugins does it fill in?

Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO and SEOPress. Recent Yoast SEO versions and Rank Math accept the SEO title, meta description and focus keyword over the WordPress REST API; for the others, the free Rank Prompt Connector plugin makes the fields save on every publish.

Can I schedule posts instead of publishing right away?

Yes. Pick a date and time: the article waits on your site as a draft and Rank Prompt makes it live at that time, confirms it by reading the post back and gives it the date it actually went live. Cancel schedule in the publish window stops it, and the draft stays a draft.

What does the Rank Prompt Connector plugin add?

The free plugin makes the SEO title, meta description and focus keyphrase save on every site, even when the SEO plugin does not take them over the REST API, and serves an IndexNow key so Bing and the other IndexNow engines hear about each post the moment it goes live. The WordPress card offers Download plugin when a site does not run it; its settings page is Settings, Rank Prompt.

Which plan do I need?

Publishing to WordPress starts on Starter at $49 a month. The article generation it publishes costs 10 credits per article.
